Modern battery-powered electric vehicles often use primary main battery voltages between 350V-650V. As in all vehicles, these must be converted to 12V or to 24V to supply various electrical consumers such as lighting, infotainment, and many more.

Depending on the application, either a 12V or 24V low-voltage circuit is then implemented, based on how the majority of the consumers need to be supplied.

Often there are 12V and 24V consumers and it is decided to use a high voltage DC/DC converter from e.g. 650 VDC to 12VDC, also because a 12V battery is usually present on the low voltage side. The 24VDC can now simply be boosted from the 12V side.

The robust DC/DC converter 729-24-SD is highly integrated in terms of broadband EMC filter, advanced control technology, state-of-the-art power semiconductors and energy storage elements. The PU potting makes it robust to shock and vibration and can be widely used for applications such as construction machinery or other vehicles.

The climate-proof design and the potted cable connections also allow it to be mounted directly on the chassis.

Like all Demke DC/DC converters, the 729-24-SD buck-boost converter is short-circuit-proof and no-load protected. The outstanding performance is underlined by the very high efficiency.

The following diagram shows the efficiency in constant voltage operation of the DC/DC converter. The efficiency is well above 90% in most of the operating range.

The converter handles input currents of up to 40A with no difficulty. The copper losses are clearly visible in the efficiency plot at low input voltages.

The Demke DC/DC converter was specially developed for emobility applications. The converter can also be supplied directly from the alternator or a 12V battery.
