DC/DC Converters for Rail-Based Transport Systems
Context and Background
In rail vehicles, a dependable power supply is essential not only for the operation of technical and control systems but also for ensuring safety and efficiency.DC/DC converters play a key role by ensuring stable power supply, even under extreme conditions. They must operate reliably under harsh conditions, including heavy pollution, intense vibrations, shocks, and wide temperature fluctuations. Typically, the supply is provided with a voltage of 110VDC, and the converters ensure that the system remains continuously powered, even during significant voltage fluctuations.
Reliable Power Supply for Rail Applications Under Constant Stress
A leading manufacturer of 130 kVA auxiliary converters for electric locomotives requires a galvanically isolated bipolar DC/DC converter for their 110V rail application.
The bipolar DC/DC converter, which can provide a positive or negative output voltages, is perfectly suited for demanding application areas. Featuring a robust full aluminum housing and polyurethane (PU) potting, the converter is highly protected for extreme climates and vibrations, making it the perfect solution for rail applications in diverse environmental conditions. Our push-pull converter 364W2-15015-SDB1 impresses with its ultra-wide input range of 16 to 160VDC and a galvanically isolated bipolar output voltage of ±15V. Parallel connections allow the doubling of power, and active loads can be easily supplied. It is particularly suitable for 24V, 48V, and 110V-DC networks.
The load distribution at the output can be up to 100% asymmetrical, for example, +8A at +15VDC or -8A at -15VDC.
Modern DC/DC Converters for Retrofit Projects
For a customer tasked with upgrading steam and diesel locomotives with modern digital radio technology, we developed a tailored solution based on the DC/DC converter 364W2-15015-SDB1, delivering an output voltage of 13.8VDC. The radio systems require a 12VDC power supply, while the input voltage fluctuates. However, the same DC/DC converter efficiently handles these variations, ensuring reliable performance throughout the upgrade process.
The diesel locomotives' power sources supply either 24VDC or 110VDC, while the steam locomotives' generators provide between 20VDC and 35VDC, reaching up to 80VDC in the event of a fault. With our ultra-wide input voltage range of 16VDC to 160VDC, a single device can accommodate all these voltage sources.
